While there are certainly risk factors for gum disease such as smoking, chewing tobacco and pregnancy, it is important to realize that gum disease can strike anyone.

Our lives as human beings are often riddled with stress which can also be a factor. I think it is important to point out what the ‘statistics’ say about this disease. Basically, most dental professionals will quote that up to 75% of people have gum disease in some form right now.

Staggering, isn’t it? If true, and I see little indication that it is not true, that means if you line up 10 people right now, the majority of them will have some form of gum disease.

I also suspect that a number of people think that because they have recently visited the dentist and the dentist did not say anything, that it means their gums are healthy. This also, may not be the case.

I know from personal experience that my dentist was not ready to spring the full details on me until it was time for a SRP (Scaling and Root Planing) procedure – often called a ‘deep cleaning’. I think it is incredibly sad that any dentist would wait that long.

I believe a periodontist I know told me that it has been studied and shown that general dentists are not always focused on the patients periodontal health. It makes sense, right? General dentists are primarily interested in finding and fixing defects with your teeth.

Yet, I would not want to let them all off the hook so easily. They know very well what gum disease looks like and they are capable of detecting it even when it is very minor.

So, what does all this mean? It simply means that you need to really make double and triple sure you are not facing gum disease RIGHT NOW.

The reason why is that gum disease can lead to gum recession, which makes your gums more vulnerable to additional attacks and recession, etc. In other words, it can become a vicious cycle.

What is the number one cause of tooth loss? Gum disease is.

Bad NEWS? Not if you take action to insure your dental health or to regain it if you have already lost some of it. The odds? The odds say you could have some form of gum disease right now. The fix? Learn all that you can now.

Will An Apple A Day Keep Diabetes Away?

I have an apple a day. I was strongly influenced by the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. I didn’t practice it much as much as a child, but I have adopted that habit in my adult life. An article I read recently says the saying may be very true. “This popular sub-acid fruit (they mean apple) is one of the most valuable of all fruits, having been found beneficial in the treatment of diabetes because of its rich pectin content.” Pectin is a natural therapeutic ingredient found in the inner portion of the rind and the pulp. “It aids in detoxification of the body by supplying the galacturonic acid needed for the elimination of certain harmful substances. The grapefruit occupies a high place among citrus fruits because of its flavor. I personally love it this time of year because of its refreshing qualities. I starting eating it years ago because I heard it help in weight loss. Not sure if it was the grapefruit, but it seemed to work for me. We all know the relationship between diabetes and weight gain.

Walking Holidays Are Actually Cool

I have not ever been number one fan of doing something that involves many activities. Why should I have to do work on vacation when I do it all year round and work, this of course was the way I used to feel.

However this all changed when I was invited to go on what I thought to be one of those waste of time active holidays however when I received the invite I had a bit of holiday left over and thought screw it I will just go. After booking it I was then told the news that it wasn’t just an active holiday but one of those walking holidays.

When I heard all of this it did not sound very good to me at all but I managed to get on with it and push through all of my worries. However as soon as I got there my opinion really did change. I was able to see the world for what it was and it was great to get out of the city and into the great wilderness. It really was amazing to see the wild for what it really is, brilliant.

The cases and things that we had with us were not needed for the walk so they were taken to our stops for us just ahead of our route so when we arrived we could use the things in our cases. All we had to take is a day backpack with the essential foods and medical stuff if needed. The thing I was most happy with is the fact that I was able to secure all of my Diabetic items as I was very worried about this.

We actually went on a Costa Rica Holidays but there are so many other active and walking holidays out there to choose from, it changed the way I thought about the world and it may be worth going on one yourself.
